CodeAscent ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.
We collect the following types of information: Account Information: Email address (required for account creation), display name (optional), profile picture (optional). Learning Data: Lesson progress and completion status, code submissions and exercise attempts, XP points and achievement data, daily streak information, time spent on lessons. Social Features (Requires Parental Consent for Under 13): Friends list and friend requests, chat messages between friends, challenge participation and scores. Device & Technical Data: Device type and operating system, app version, push notification tokens (if enabled), crash logs and performance data. Payment Information: Subscription status (managed by Apple/Google). We do NOT store credit card or payment details. Important for Children Under 13: We minimize data collection for users under 13. Social features and messaging require verified parental consent before activation.
We use your information for the following purposes: Core App Functionality: Providing personalized learning experiences, tracking and displaying your progress, enabling social features (friends, chat, challenges), sending push notifications (with your consent). Service Improvement: Analyzing usage patterns to improve lessons, fixing bugs and technical issues, developing new features. Communication: Sending important account notifications, responding to support requests, daily challenge reminders (if enabled). We do NOT: Sell your personal data to third parties, use your data for targeted advertising, share your learning data publicly without consent, or use children's data for behavioral advertising or profiling.
We use the following third-party services, all of which are contractually bound to provide the same or greater protection of user data: RevenueCat: Subscription management only. No personal information shared for children. Apple App Store / Google Play: Payment processing and app distribution. Expo/React Native: App framework and push notifications. Push tokens are device-specific, not personally identifiable. Sentry: Crash and error diagnostics only. Collects anonymous crash reports, stack traces, device model, OS version, and app version so we can diagnose and fix bugs. Not linked to your account identity and never used for advertising. Active only when crash diagnostics are enabled for a build. Privacy: https://sentry.io/privacy/ All third-party services are contractually required to protect your data, prohibited from using data for advertising purposes, required to delete data upon our request, and compliant with applicable children's privacy laws.
Your data is stored on secure servers with industry-standard encryption. Security Measures: All data transmitted using TLS/SSL encryption, passwords hashed using secure algorithms, regular security audits and updates, access controls and authentication. Data Retention: Account data retained while account is active. Learning progress retained while account is active. Chat messages retained for 1 year. Deleted account data removed within 30 days.
CodeAscent is designed for users of all ages, including children under 13. We take children's privacy extremely seriously and comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Verifiable Parental Consent: Before collecting any personal information from children under 13, we require verifiable parental consent through an integrated verification process. Data Minimization for Children: We collect only data necessary for the learning experience. Social features (friends, chat) are disabled by default for children. No behavioral advertising or profiling of children. Parental Rights: Parents and guardians can at any time review their child's personal information, request deletion of their child's data, refuse further collection of their child's data, disable social features and messaging.
You have the following rights regarding your data: Access: Request a copy of your personal data. Correction: Update or correct inaccurate data. Deletion: Request deletion of your account and data. Portability: Export your learning progress data. Opt-out: Disable push notifications, analytics. California Residents (CCPA): You have additional rights including the right to know what data we collect and the right to opt-out of data sales (we do not sell data). EU Residents (GDPR): You have rights under GDPR including data portability, right to be forgotten, and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
On iOS 14.5 and later, we request your permission through Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework before any tracking occurs. What we don't do: No cross-app tracking for advertising, no sharing data with ad networks, no building advertising profiles, no behavioral targeting of any users (especially children), and no third-party advertising in the app.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by posting a notice in the app, sending an email notification, and updating the "Last Updated" date. For material changes affecting children's data, we will obtain new parental consent where required.
